What types of construction defects could you find in your home?

The house you live in reflects your personal style. Many people spend years searching for the perfect home, and its possible that you found your dream house here in Orange County. But sometimes, the house you find needs some extra work to meet your standards, or you need to build one from scratch to get it just right. In that case, you’d need to hire some professionals.

No matter who you hire, you run a risk by allowing strangers to work on your house. There is always a risk of flawed work when you hire outside help. Some construction defects are easily fixable, but others could leave you with big bills and larger construction issues down the road. Here are some of the defects you could come across during a home renovation or building process:

Design defects

You may need to hire an architect or structural engineer if you are building a house. Those professionals could design something incorrectly, such as a roof or a basement. If something structural in your home has a flawed design, that could lead to issues like leakage. The foundation of a home is especially important in California, where an incorrectly designed house could shift or flood due to expanding soil.

Manufacturing defects

The builders you hire will be responsible for selecting and ordering the products they’ll need to accomplish the goals you have for your house. A manufacturing company could send inferior products to your builders. Those products could be low quality or the wrong size for what you need for your home. In that case, your builders may catch the issue before they use the product. If they don’t, an incorrectly made product could cause issues later.

Installation defects

Even if the products you buy are made correctly, there is still the chance that builders could install them incorrectly. Builders are responsible for making sure your home is made the right way. For example, if a builder didn’t put a window in the right way, your house could be subject to the elements or a wild animal.

Make sure you keep all your records and receipts when you hire someone to help you with your house. Those documents will be important when proving your case.
